Description
This book is for people who are new to a form of Christian worship that is centered on the weekly celebration of the Holy Communion. It will be a help to people moving from a non-liturgical church to a more liturgical church and to those contemporary Christians who are seeking an ancient-future form of Christian worship. Those who are familiar with Eucharistic worship will encounter new treasures that have been hiding in plain sight. The book follows carefully the service of Holy Communion as it is celebrated in a local congregation, describing what is done and why. The service chosen is from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Christians of other traditions will find close parallels to the way this central act of worship is celebrated in their own tradition.

The Rev. Dr. Leander Harding has given a valuable gift to Christians, especially to Anglicans, in his book "In the Breaking of Bread." This book is subtitled "A User's Guide to a Service of Holy Communion in the Anglican Tradition," and it fully serves that purpose; however, it is much more than a user's guide. Harding elaborates on Holy Communion to take readers deep into the gracious miracle of our participation in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Eucharistic service. Each sentence in this book is carefully and prayerfully written by Harding and is rich in Christian tradition and in the author's own experiences of worship and ministry. Many times while reading this book I found myself savoring the winsome writing and meditating on the worshipful language of Harding. He teaches novices the language and ritual of Communion and enlightens the hearts and minds of seasoned communicants. This is a book that I wish I could buy everyone I know and somehow convince them to read immediately. Harding expounds on the narrative of Luke 24 of the "Road to Emmaus" in which the risen Christ comes alongside two of his sullen disciples and opens up the Scriptures to them and then reveals himself to them "in the breaking of the bread." Harding compares the Lord's Supper or Eucharist to this journey of the disciples with Jesus. As Harding details the service, readers will find themselves on a journey of revelation of the risen Christ and His body--the church, and his body and blood in the bread and wine of Communion. As an Anglican priest, I was surprised by how Harding's writing not only brought me insights but served as a devotional resource to draw me to Jesus. It is so much more than a practial guide to use to teach others. It is a love song inviting readers to a more meaningful and truer worship of Jesus.I recommend this book for all Christians regardless of your faith tradition. This book is a great blessing for the church.
