The 9090 isn't just the first espresso coffee maker in Alessi's history: it was also Alessi's first object for the kitchen after the 1930s, the first of Alessi's many Compasso d'Oro awards (1979), Alessi's first object to be inducted into the Permanent Design Collection at the New York MOMA, and of course it's the best-loved Alessi coffee maker bar none, as well as Alessi's first "amphibious object", i.e. it is for kitchen use, but with its high design quality it can also be brought directly to the table.

Expensive, but well made.Great looking piece of kit, works well.I wanted a stainless steel moka-pot to go on a glass-topped halogen hob.We have had a couple of less expensive pots from a famous maker that were poorly made. I went ahead and spent the money on the 6 cup version of the Sapper pot by Alessi. However, I found that I frequently made half a pot and messing about with the 3 cup adapter was a mess and a fiddle. So when I had the opportunity I went ahead and bought the 3 cup version. Perhaps it is a bit excessive but I'm very happy with this purchase.Things to be aware of:Alessi Spare parts aren't easy to come by. (Edit 21/1/2020 much easier to get spares direct from Alessi than it used to be.)3 Cups is 150ml about a 3rd of a large mug.It's not Espresso, but it is STRONG and can easily stand a bit of dilution (Americano style).Coarser grinds work best as the holes in the funnel are not particularly fine. (Edit 21/1/2020 Coarser than Espresso but not gravel more like sharp sand)The base is only 11cm in diameter - a smallish ring on your hob is best.The handle looks like plastic in the photographs but it is in fact stainless steel. It is used to clamp the pot closed - a system that is far more convenient and error free than other screw on pots.
