Description
An anonymous gift sends a woman on a journey she never could have anticipated.   One afternoon, Julia Evarts and her five-year-old daughter, Gracie, arrive home to find an unexpected gift on the front porch: a homemade loaf of Amish Friendship Bread and a simple note: I hope you enjoy it. Also included are a bag of starter, instructions on how to make the bread herself, and a request to share it with others. Still reeling from a personal tragedy that left her estranged from the sister who was once her best friend, Julia remains at a loss as to how to move on with her life. She’d just as soon toss the anonymous gift, but to make Gracie happy, she agrees to bake the bread.   When Julia meets two newcomers to the small town of Avalon, Illinois, she sparks a connection by offering them her extra bread starter. Widow Madeline Davis is laboring to keep her tea salon afloat while Hannah Wang de Brisay, a famed concert cellist, is at a crossroads, her career and marriage having come to an abrupt end. In the warm kitchen of Madeline’s tea salon, the three women forge a friendship that will change their lives forever. In no time, everyone in Avalon is baking Amish Friendship Bread. But even as the town unites for a benevolent cause and Julia becomes ever closer to her new friends, she realizes the profound necessity of confronting the painful past she shares with her sister. About life and loss, friendship and community, food and family, Friendship Bread tells the uplifting story of what endures when even the unthinkable happens.

I've really enjoyed reading this book. It's an enchanting, heart warming story that leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy at the end.The storyline is interesting and revolves around the lives of 3 women Julia, Hannah and Madeline living in the small town of Avalon, Illinois. Each woman carries their own heartbreaks, secrets and regrets, but as their lives are brought together in the wonderful tea shop owned by Madeline, they learn to deal with their losses and grief whilst developing new friendships and even rekindling family relationships over the sweet taste of Friendship Bread. Sounds mushy but it's not. The author deals with each woman's personal issues on a realistic level.Julia is a mother of a daughter and wife to a sensitive, supporting husband who are both suffering from the traumatic death of their son, prior to their daughter being born. Their marriage threatens to fall apart as she tries to survive through this grief and she is unaware that her strongest life support throughout this ordeal is actually the man by her side. Mixed in with this is estrangement from her sister Livvy and feelings of guilt and blame as to the actual cause of the death of her son.Hannah, a gifted concert cellist who recently moved to Avalon, has found out that her husband has been unfaithful with a member of their orchestra and her marriage has fallen apart. She is scared and disillusioned and trying to come to terms with living her life without her husband.Madeline, the oldest of the 3, owns the tea shop where the warmth of her kitchen forges the friendship of these ladies. Madeline's husband has passed away and she feels deep regret at the loss of contact with her step-son. There is a letter that she has written to her step-son and not had the courage to send. This uplifting story covers life, loss, friendship and family with a community filled with many other characters and stories. Bring into the recipe an unexpected anonymous gift of home made Friendship Bread with a note attached saying "I hope you enjoy it" plus another bag of starter and instructions on how to make the bread. This bread unites Avalon in so many ways...A lovely read.5 Stars from me
