Read many reviews on many apple peelers and the Johnny Apple Peeler VKP1010 kept coming up as one of the better ones. So I ordered one.It arrived at my doorstep today December 1, 2021I read all the instructions that came with it which are pretty straight forward.Watched all the videos on line that the instructions recommended I watch, and I followed along with my Johnny Apple Peeler in hand as the videos explained each feature. Pausing as needed.I didn't assemble it yet as it's getting late and I am starting to get sleepy. I put it all back in the box for tomorrow...... but, before putting it in the box I gave it the once over and discovered that the Stainless Steel Coring & Slicing Blade looks very very rough, rugged, and jagged. The part that does the slicing and not the part that does the coring. I ran my fingers on it the see if it felt like it looked and it did. It is very very rough. It even looks somewhat brittle on the cutting edge and that some of the smaller particles may fall off, meaning they very well may end up in my sliced apples for consumption! Yikes!I felt a few "prickles" on my fingers soon after I rubbed them on the jagged edge, so I quickly washed my hands with soap and water and rinsed them thoroughly and then wiped them dry. The prickly feeling when away.I'll either have to contact Amazon soon or the manufacturer soon and ask if this is the way the cutting blade is supposed to look. I can't believe that it is. I would expect it to look more like a smooth razor blade, not a rake for leaves.I'll come back and update this remark when I find out more.Update: December 5, 2021I set up the return online and also reordered a replacement Johnny Apple Peeler at the same time on Dec 4, 2021.Printed out the supplied QR code that I'll need to show when I take my return to Whole Foods.Went to Whole Foods and the process was very very easy to return the item.I received my replacement Johnny Apple Peeler today! One day later.I opened it up and gave the cutting blades a good inspection. This one was in much better shape but still kinda rough. I guess that’s just the way it’s going to be and the best they can do Taiwan were this item is made. The rest of the item seems in good shape.I strongly recommend you CAREFULLY take the coring and slicing blade off the machine and carefully and gently “swish” it by hand in a soapy bowl of hot water, rinse it off, and then gently dab it dry and replace it.The reason I recommend this is because there seem to be some oily contaminants on the blade, as well as small metal shards and particles that may fall off when you first use this item, and most people would not want to ingest something like that.Whether you take this blade off or not, it is very important that you alien the coring part of the blade with the steel shaft. Not an easy task I might add, but take the time to do it. If you want it to work correctly and not wear out prematurely.I’ve included some photos for your viewing pleasure of the blade on the original Johnny Apple Peeler I purchased.I may update this review again after I use the item.Update: December 29, 2021I've used it now to "process" five pounds of apples and it works great. Once I've loaded the apple, it takes about five seconds to peel, core, and slice the apple. Pretty impressive indeed. It seems to be well built and made of quality material and easy to clean after use. As mentioned by others, the suction works very well. Some have complained that once it is assembled it will not fit back into its original box and that is correct due to the hand crank on the shaft. However, if you remove the prongs (easy to do) on the other end of the shaft and then pull the entire shaft off the machine (also easy to do), you can then put the machine in the box, the prongs in the box, and then angle the shaft in the box with the crank handle still attached and it will all fit in the box nicely for you.Final Update: January 20, 2022I've peeled, sliced, and cored four three pound bags of apples in the past few months and the Johnny Apple Peeler works like a charm. One bag of Red Delicious and three bags of Honey Crisp all with great results. How fast it does this task is only limited to how fast you can load the next apple. Once the apple is in position and you start turning the crank, it only takes about five seconds for it to peel, slice, and core the entire apple.... much, much faster than any other method I've ever used up till now.I've made three apple pies and will be using it this coming fall to make my annual batch of apple sauce.Tip: When setting up to do a job and I have the peeler in place, the last thing I do before I start processing apples is put some paper towels under where the cutting, peeling, and coring is done. It just makes less mess and clean up a little easier.... But that's just me.I love this dandy little contraption! Have probably run 2 or 300 apples through it so over the last weekend and is still working like a champ. My suggestion to other users, when putting apples on the prongs, stop just short of pushing it completely on… against the back. This way you can see when you are about to go through the corer blade, thereby lessening the risk of damaging the blade. The clearance between blade and apple holder is very slim. This works well. Its pretty heavy duty and I expect it to last. BUT, It makes apples pies and french fries too easy to make. I'm trying to lose weight and this is not helping. We go through a lot of apples and potatoes and my hands are starting to feel the result. If you have the same problem, you must have a peeler. I happen to like this one but you can get any one you want. JUST GET ONE! Your knuckles will thank you, I promise. :<)Purchased this last year after apple season, finally got to use it. This is the real deal, heavy duty construction, works great, simple to use. If you need one buy it you won’t regret it. Would buy again but won’t have to because it’s built to last.I work for an apple and pear grower/processor and wanted a tool that is reliable and sturdy as I use it a lot. I have previously used another well known brand, and hoped this would be at least as good. It is better. It has handled some fruit that I thought would be too ripe based on my experience with the other brand. The paint is solid too, which is essential for clean up and continued clean use.I have only had one minor problem, which is the screw on the handle comes loose after I do 40-50 apples. That is not a big deal. I just had to learn to keep the screw driver nearby and a with a quick tightening, I am off and running again.I am glad I made the choice. If you think you might get a better value by buying something for a little less money, I suggest you forget that because this unit is pretty solid for home use. Some simple tips for use are:Make sure you align the stem and bottom of that apple so that it travels the correct path as you turn it through. If the apple is an odd shape, it still processes it nicely as long as you make sure to align it properly.Do keep a nice paring knife nearby for the occasional trim that you will need to do before or after you run it through.Make sure you have a good non-porous surface to mount it on, and a little water on cup assists in make the bond strong. If it is secured properly you can crank on it pretty good and it will not move.Do wash it off as soon as you finish the last apple. I use a dish brush and it gets into the nooks and crannies without scraping my knuckles up. Apples have sugar content and it makes a little bit harder to clean once it has dried. Still not a big deal, but it is harder to get all of it off can keep it sanitary for the next use.The is a direct correlation between an apples firmness and the sugar content. The meat in an apple starts out as a starch and turns to sugar as it ripens. The firmer the apple is, the higher the starch content.Apples can be stored for long periods of time in cold storage. However, apples have 30 taste characteristics and after a few months in cold storage they loose 20 of those characteristics. If you get an apple that has no taste, it is probably due to the length of time it has been in cold storage. This is a good time to tell your grocer that you do not want to buy old fruit. Also, in many cases the people who are stocking produce will have the packing information, including when it was packed.Size can also be a tell tale sign. Smaller apples are often not as ripe as larger apples as the are picked earlier in their growth cycle. Because smaller apples are less ripe, they store longer and may get to market after longer storage times and be less tasty.I ordered this peeler because I was making applebutter. The peeler came just in time to use it, except the fork part had no threads to put it on to the shaft, so I called customer service and Kimberly took my call and she got the fork sent out to me that morning I got 5 days later which is when I expected it and it works GREAT ! Customer service is FANTASTIC ! This is a great purchase. It really works and makes baking apple pie so much faster and easier. Very sturdy and durable—I have used it for several years baking pies for farmers markets and it just keeps going. I love this product.I did quite a bit of research before buying this and expected a quality product for the price. I used it to peel some apples and was happy with the performance, but the next day discovered that several parts of the shaft have started to go rusty. Not happy. This product came with foreign instructions. It was assembled and worked well so I thought this didn't matter but when I tried to peel a potato on it, it fell to pieces. Now in need of English instructions to put it back together. It is now biting into the apple, right down to the core. HELP.Made easier to peel apples and we were able to speed up jam makingThis really works well. I had an older type that looked the same and it was like useless. I really love the suction cup as that sticks to the table like crazy. There is no way you could pull it off, without releasing the handle. I once had a clamp on type and those are useless as they just do not attach anywhere as firm as the suction cup ones. Now I have peeled potatoes with very good results. Here is a little trick that I discovered. If you have an odd shaped potato or apple and for some reason at the beginning the blade wants to chew up the potato or apple, just lift the arm back a bit so it is not sinking into the apple/potato. Also if its like failing to remove some peeling in some parts just gently also push in the arm towards the apple/potato.I would say it peels 95% of the apple/potato. Just at the core at both ends yo will see some peeling that you can easily touch up or just leave it on.Overall, this works really well and shipping was super fast I might ad also.Great product, my son loves it!
