Focused on village life in what is now southwest Germany, this is excellent background information for almost anyone researching their German heritage. This is well-written and readable historical fiction based on much research into everyday German village life during the time period. Descriptions of the effects of changes in religion and government during that time, having good and not-so-good overseers and good and bad crop years, changes in family life, plus the economics of skilled trades and their guilds, divided inheritances, new technology, wars and plagues on an ordinary family, will help the reader's understanding as to why so many in Germany were motivated to emigrate to America during that tme period.
