I originally received this product with one of the screw heads sheared off; this probably would not have affected its performance, as it was on the bottom piece of wood where the bread rests & the other 3 screws were very tight. But I reached out to the company to see if I could either somehow get the broken screw out to replace or get a new bottom board. They were wonderful to work with & were quick & responsive. Sent me a whole new item & did not need the other one returned. So my original rating would have been 4 stars but gave 5th for the great service. I was skeptical that shreds of bamboo would be coming off from the slots--there were just a couple of barely seen "threads" upon opening--but just to be safe I used the buffer side of an emery board to gently go inside each slot. Used it for the first time last night & it worked perfectly! I have a 1 lb. bread machine so my loaf fit just fine. Maybe 2lb. loaves are taller & the guide posts would be a little short but it's not a problem, you just put your knife in & start slicing. The backboard really helps hold the loaf in place. There is only a slight give from the sides but not a problem, I just put a little pressure on the back board--the sides really hold up well. Slots are not greatly different & the smallest looks like if used, the bread would be too thin & fall apart. I used the medium & they lined up perfectly, no wrong angles at the bottom of the slice to make it uneven. I took suggestions of using a flexible cutting mat to place on the bottom so I didn't worry about cutting the bottom wood. (Just happened to have one from my camping days)! I should say that the first one I ordered (replacement for my old, cheap plastic slicing guide) was another plastic one that only held one end of the bread. It was really crappy & inconvenient so I returned it & got this one. I am one that spends literally hours reading reviews, going back & forth & did not really want to spend $25 on this, I don't bake bread all that often but I think that will change--there's nothing like it & it's so darn easy! So this is the one to get. Just hope I can still say this after using it for awhile but I'm confident.
